The discovery of H.pylori:
In the 1980s, an Australian internist named Marshall, who treated mainly gastritis and gastric ulcers, and his collaborator Robin Warren discovered that many patients who came to the hospital for gastric treatment had a spiral-shaped rod-shaped bacterium, known as Helicobacter pylori, living in their stomachs.
After research, Marshall et al. also came up with an even more startling idea: H.pylori is the culprit of many stomach diseases such as gastritis, stomach ulcers and even stomach cancer.
High prevalence of H.pylori infection in the stomach:
Epidemiological survey have found surprisingly high rates of H.pylori infection above 50% in many countries, and even over 90% in some countries.
Probability of infection in different populations:
Age | 20 to 29 | 30 to 39 | 40 to 49 | age more than 50 years |
infection rate | 26% | 28% | 34% | 69% |
In our country, many general hospitals have screening program for H.pylori, or you can use the Helicobacter Pylori (HP) Rapid Test for a quick initial screening.
